Purpose: This study aims to determine the degree of self-management among adolescents with type 1 diabetes and its associacted factors.
Methods: The study participants(N=144). 13¡18 years of age were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and were receiving outpatient treatment a the pediatric diabetes clinic in a tertiary medical center in B City. The participants responded to structured self-reporting questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis with Windows SPSS Ver.24.
Results: Out of the 144 participants, 74 (51.4%) participants were male students, with a mean age of 15 years (15.2¡¾1.93). The mean score of the depression level was 6.76¡¾7.01, with 31.3% having mild and higher depression. The mean scores for self-efficacy and self-management were 59.20¡¾1.76, and 3.48¡¾10.2, respectively. The variables that significantly affected self-management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes were self-efficacy (?=.15, p<.001) and depression (?=?0.18, p=.015). Self-efficacy and depression explained 46.2% of the total variance in self-management of adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Conclusion: Improving self-management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes requires development of self-efficacy and depression management programs.
